Why a Mock Election?

Waterfront NantucketThis creative fundraising project benefits the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce to assist in its efforts to promote and support Nantucket's economy. The Chamber has not been immune to the results of the recession and state budget cuts, and these challenges brought about financial difficulties for an organization that so many businesses and non-profits rely on. The money raised here will benefit the Chamber, and through it, the entire Nantucket community.

There's a reason this "election" begins each year on April Fools' Day -- it's meant to be lighthearted fun! Nantucket's Honorary Mayor will not have any actual power. The Honorary Mayor will be expected to participate in Chamber-sponsored island events and to behave well in the spirit of this tongue-in-cheek fundraiser.

Candidates are encouraged to place "paid political advertisements" in local newspapers, websites, magazines, e-newsletters and blogs. They may use Facebook and Twitter to rally family and friends to vote for them.

Ad space for island businesses will be available on this Election website, although candidates’ ads will not be accepted. For advertising information, call the Chamber office at 508-228-1700, stop by their office upstairs at Zero Main Street, or send an email to pr@nantucketchamber.org.
